Project Highlight: Ground-Up EV Charging Station

Building an EV Charging Station

Did you know that electric vehicles (EVs) accounted for over 25% of all new vehicle sales in Colorado in 2024? With EVs on the rise, so is the need for conveniently located EV charging stations.

We’ll walk you through a recent project where we built an EV charging station from the ground up as a full scope civil contractor. When we say the ground up, we mean that literally; we started with the dirt.

Overview of the EV Charging Station Project

Our team created a strategy to tackle the full civil scope (excavation, utilities, and concrete) for the EV charging site. Foundations were excavated 12-ft deep and constructed with reinforced concrete.

The key to success was communication and coordinating efforts across the multiple angles of the project and working closely with the electrical contractors. With intentional planning, the team implemented the necessary utilities, including an electric duct bank and sturdy storm drain.

Overcoming Challenges

As you likely guessed, with any project, some challenges arose for the team to navigate. The project began in January, and the team completed the project entirely through the Colorado winter months.

Naturally, this led to delays. It’s not only challenging, but it’s not at all recommended to install concrete when it’s snowing.

We’ve found that challenges lead to creative thinking and problem-solving. The team worked around this weather factor by remaining flexible and pivoting their schedules when warm weather pockets popped up. (We all appreciate a sunny day after a snowy one in Colorado).

Another challenge was a little more technical – the parking lot was built with a cement stabilized base. This made it difficult for the currently-in-use equipment to dig through and complete the task at hand.

A recurring aspect in construction is understanding the challenges and quickly identifying solutions. The civil crew wasted no time and brought in a second excavator that included a breaker hammer to allow them to dig through the cement base.

A construction team would be hard-pressed to encounter a project where everything flows without a challenge or setback. This is a key reason why we’re passionate about having an intentional strategy, thoroughly understanding the task, and quickly working to find solutions when something arises.

What Made the Project a Success?

We believe that success is found not only in the finished product but also in the process of learning, pivoting, and problem-solving as a team.

This project stands out as one we’d frame on a “wall of success” for a few reasons:

  • Coordination and communication between the electricians and the General Contractor
    • This was essential for timely pivots, updates in the timeline, and understanding the changes taking place.
  • A diverse crew experienced in structural concrete, dirt, and utilities
    • This gave us a lot of capabilities to incorporate a thorough scope of work and analyze aspects of the project from multiple angles.
  • Overall, it was a smooth project
    • This is in large part due to the positivity of the team, an enthusiastic work environment, and good team morale. When people take pride and show investment in their work, it makes a difference.

What’s Next?

We’re thankful for every opportunity to build something from the ground up, better the community, and bring a team together to make a difference. From the start of the project at the beginning of January to the wrap-up in March, the EV Charging Station project was a success from every account.

Notably, it was a positive experience working with the fantastic electricians at evplugpros.com. We’re excited for more collaboration in the future!
