What is proof rolling?
Proof rolling is a field observation method used to identify soft, pumping or unstable areas in prepared subgrade. A loaded piece of equipment is moved across a defined area while the team watches how the surface responds. Excessive deflection, rutting or pumping can signal that the material needs further evaluation before pavement, structures or other work proceeds.
It is not a replacement for an engineered geotechnical evaluation. Instead, it gives the project team a practical way to see whether conditions vary across the site and whether a questionable area should be undercut, dried, stabilized, reworked or tested further. What compaction testing verifies
Compaction testing is different. It checks whether placed fill or backfill has been compacted to the density and moisture condition required by the project documents. Testing is typically performed by a qualified testing agency at the locations, depths and frequencies required by the plans or geotechnical recommendations.
The specific target is not universal. The required compaction depends on the material, the test method, the location and what will be supported above it. A building pad, utility trench, roadway base and landscaped area can have different requirements. Why it matters before the site is covered
Once utilities are buried, curb and gutter is placed, or pavement is installed, correcting an unsuitable subgrade becomes harder and more expensive. Verification before those scopes move forward helps the team catch conditions while equipment, access and material are still available.
Good verification can protect against:
- settlement beneath pavement or slabs;

- poor drainage caused by disturbed grades;
- failed inspections or delayed releases;
